Design/Build
Part of the process. From concept to build and paint. To realized set. "Leading Ladies"

My original concept designs for SF Mimes "Treasure Island" First one is actual set. Though my fav was the one with the old map and canon!

My Design and Build Philosophy
My sets are all different. If they have any, one style, it is that I like to do something interesting with the top.
I do not just design and render a set. I build the set in my program in 3D with all the dimensional lumber and hardware it will require. It then becomes the model, which can be easily modified.
I then do detailed plans, and scale drawings of levels and ground (floor plans). I have a thing for detail.
I believe sets should be light, but as strong and safe as they can be.
A set that will tour, needs to assemble and disassemble as quickly as possible. Corners and breakable protrusions should be dutched. (fabric and glue) To help reinforce and prevent cracking and breaking. It must be primed inside and out (to help prevent warping.)
And after final paint, a coat or two of a flat water based shellac can be used.
NEVER CUT CORNERS to save a few bucks. It can make for a weak un-safe set.
